Movie Steak

A choice between watching the 51st State and The X-Files movie was never going to be an easy one but I think I made the right choice. I’d seen some of it before but mainly just the start and never really knew what was going on and with my new appetite for the show it was an interesting watch.

The movie takes place after the end of series 5 where the X-Files have been burned and closed but also acts like a setup for series 6. It’s basically like an extended episode rather than a movie but doesn’t get boring like some of them do (*cough* Rugrats movie).

The plot is pretty explicit about the whole alien conspiracy, it really drags it out into the open.

Good film, perhaps not for non-fans of the show but for anyone who likes the X-Files it’s definitely worth checking out.

On the surface it looks like a great movie, especially as it stars Jim Carrey. Well, it is a good movie but making a comedy featuring Jim Carrey that isn’t totally about Jim Carrey isn’t a good idea. It’s a good movie but it lakes the Jim Carrey magic that he works up in his solo performances.

The plotline behind is about Harry and Lloyd, two friends that as can you imagine from the title are really dump. They take a briefcase dropped off for hostage money thinking that the woman who dropped it just forgot it.

Pretty good but needed more Jim Carrey creativity.

Asian cinema is just mental. And we love it because of it. Battle Royale is a Japanese (I think it’s Japanese anyway) and the basic plot is that there was a law past which created this thing called Battle Royale in which is a class is selected, sent to an island and are forced to battle to the death until only one remains.

They all have explosives round their necks so that they can’t just do nothing and are given an array of weapsons from semi-automatics and shutguns to pan lins and binoculars (and other such pretty useless crap when other people have swords and guns). As you can image, it is a total gore fest.

It does tend to get a bit, one kill after another but overall it’s a sorted movie if your into watching people get brutually killed. It’s not like it’s over the top buckets of blood either, just enough to make it hidiously gorey.

EdTV is one of those movies I have been meaning to watch for a while but never got round to it. So when I saw it was on the Channel 4 lineup I wasn’t going to miss it even if it did start at midnight and I had to be up crazily early. So much for catching up on the sleep I missed at uni over Christmas.

The film tells the tell of a guy named Ed who agrees to have his entire life broadcast on TV. Kind of Truman Show style except obviously he knows it is going on and there are big camera crews following his every move. It’s starts out pleasant enough but he soon finds it’s messing with his entire life.

The plot keeps rolling along nicely and keeps it interesting. It always amazes me how you can spin 90 minutes out of a topic such as this but I did enjoy the movie all the way through. It has the whole predictable happy ending thing but then it’s Hollywood, it was never going to be any different.

The cast is probably one of the movies strongest points. Matthew McConaughey stars and is supported by Jenna Elfman of Dharma & Greg fame and Woody Harrelson who is just a legend in his own right.

Conclusion: EdTV is one cool movie. Although it’s not massively extravagant but it’s one of the most enjoyable movies I’ve seen in a while.

Re-watched Eurotrip last night, good movie. Not Roadtrip good but then is anything? Roadtrip was seriously awesome whereas Eurotrip was just pretty damn good. The soundtrack, Scotty Doesn’t Know really is one hell of a catchy song which makes it all good ;).

The plot is decent enough, it follows basically the same idea that Roadtrip did but with enough of a twist to make it different enough to stay away from the whole clone thing. There is some quality sterotyping in there, I would just like to point out that less than 90% of the British population are soccer hooligans. We’re quite capable of rioting about other things too.

The cast was pretty good, Michelle Trachtenberg rocks. They never did manage to get naked though. The jokes are traditonal Roadtrip just so bad they are funny but then it almost goes too far with some of them. You will spot that when you watch it.

Overall? Good comedy, but expect the traditional outragous type of jokes you find in the teen comedy American Pie style movies.
